EU gives green light for Libya naval mission as ceasefire hangs in balance by RFI published on 2020-02-17T17:39:10Z EU foreign ministers have agreed to a new mission to enforce an arms embargo in Libya following repeated violations of last month's ceasefire. Ministers met in Brussels in Monday to discuss the conflict in Tripoli. It comes after UN deputy special envoy to Libya Stephanie Williams, described the current arms embargo in place as a "joke", calling on those who breach it to be held to account. The European Union was split over whether to revive a maritime surveillance mission in the Mediterranean to ensure the UN arms embargo is respected, out of fears that it could create a "pull effect" for migrants hoping to cross into Europe. Despite the EU naval mission, experts like Mitchell Belfer, head of the European Gulf Information Centre in Rome, are sceptical that it will ensure a lasting ceasefire.
