A huge glacial ice sheet covered the whole of the south coast 250 million years ago. During this period Glacier Rock was dragged across the Fleurieu Peninsula by the ice helping to groove and scratch rock surfaces between Victor Harbor and Inman Valley. The grooves, scratches and crescent shaped marks on the rock surface of the Inman Valley River bed are significant evidence of the direction of the ice movement.
