Had I continued ‘The Turning Point’, last month would have been 10 years since it first aired..and I more than likely would have put together an event for it back home. Because of this, I felt it was a good time to share a special mix that I not only compiled for TTP but I also wanted to dedicate this mix to the legendary NYC nightclub, TWILO - the club that changed my life forever in a single night.
There might be a handful of people reading this who know of or have been to Twilo, or any of the great megaclubs in NYC during that era. It was the time of my life and a great moment in NYC clubbing history. I was lucky enough to go on the nights where DJs like Jimmy van M and the NYC based DJ Sean Cusick (mix includes tracks from both of them) were playing and opening the night up for Sasha & Digweed, before I even had a clue what this music and culture was about and which DJs were who.
After going to teen nights for a few years in my Brooklyn home town, Twilo was like graduation - a step into a different realm and caliber of clubbing…a more refined, matured, underground sound and music being showcased by artists and DJs who knew it on a completely different level than anything I ever experienced at the time.
Although the mix contains some music that was released after the closing of the club back in 2001, I selected both era correct tracks and also, tunes that encompassed the Twilo ‘sound’, in order to best convey the vibe, atmosphere, environment and feeling of the club from my experiences on those nights. Twilo was dark, it was brooding, it was chuggy, groovy..it was bass driven. It was deep, it was house, it was trance, it was tribal, it was techno. It was the best club I have ever been to. (Stereo in Montreal comes next). It was a place I went to escape the world.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures from when I went as it was a time where people lived more authentically and in the moment, before social media and smartphones, so I used a google image of the club.
In closing, Twilo laid the groundwork for the type of DJ I aspired to be and ultimately became, and it also set the bar for the types of events I wanted to put together - vibe, atmosphere, sound-wise etc. With that being said, here is a mix for the unofficial 10 years of TTP and the late, great TWILO on West 27th in NYC.
Mixed on two Technics SL-1210s and a Technics SH-EX1200 Mixer
