Old School South African Kwaito - Mix Vol. 1 by Ru Robinson published on 2020-04-07T10:51:47Z During the 1990s, a unique style of slowed down house music emerged in Johannesburg. Taking shape in the Soweto township at the same time Nelson Mandela took office, Kwaito was an artistic expression that thrived. It flourished after the removal of political sanctions following negotiations to end the apartheid system throughout the early part of the decade. For some time, much of the music was sold out the boots of cars and distributed to record stores by the groups themselves. Later, artists and producers such as Trompies, TKZee, Mashamplani, Mdu and Arthur helped popularise the music outside of Johannesburg and beyond. Here is a selection of some tracks which I really enjoy - the ones which I could get hold of that is.
