Seven Year Curse EP by Skinny Pelembe published on 2017-07-12T13:45:35Z Out August 11th 2017. via [Skinny's Own] Pre Order 7Inch at skinnypelembe.bandcamp.com Limited to 250 copies. Art by Femaleonacid. Released on 7” / Digital on 11th August 2017 With a sample-hunting, studio-meddling mindset, Skinny Pelembe’s music roams hazy, psychedelic tangents. Supported by Gilles Peterson and his Future Bubblers programme, he’s a sparkling multi-instrumentalist tapping into strains of Afro-tipped soul. “I guess the lesson is don't discount the advice of strangers, even if they're massive Kula Shaker fans.” So says Skinny Pelembe, as he recalls an important insight he’s gleaned in making his debut EP. As he recounts, it was the advice of an over-familiar German stranger – via a message on Instagram – which prompted him to start writing down his dreams. Using those late-night, scribbled notes as inspiration for his lyrics, they’ve produced results that are honest and often surreal. Interwoven amongst loose, textured rhythms and a bright-tinted melodic sheen, his songs exist in the wonderful, hard-to-define fringes of pop. Overlaying sampled, programmed beats with live drums and percussion, sun-flecked riffs cut through the EP’s fuzzy aura. Born in Johannesburg and raised in Doncaster, Skinny is based in London. Receiving big support from Gilles Peterson, “Should You Go” was premiered on his BBC 6 Music show and features on the latest edition of the legendary DJ and curator’s Brownswood Bubblers compilations. Skinny Pelembe is also part of Future Bubblers, the Arts Council England-funded programme led by Peterson for developing new, unsigned acts. Tracklist 1. Seven Year Curse 2. Listen To The Stars 3.
