132: Only in Finland? All vinyl mix by DJ IJJ by The Vinyl Exam published on 2017-02-20T21:24:08Z Please share this episode with friends and family. --- This week we have an all vinyl mix brought to you deep from the crates of Ilari aka DJ IJJ. I have not heard a single song in this mix before and I absolutely love it. Check him out here: https://soundcloud.com/dj-ijj Here’s a note from DJ IJJ and the track list with his notes on each song (with slight edits by our host Sama): "I started to go through my records and ended up with this. It’s a short weirdish mix of music and specially records that I like and that for whatever reason popped up at this moment in time. Old Soul, jazz, funk, country etc. no contemporary stuff.” Tracklist: Kirka - Igor (1969) Just a great track and one of the heaviest funk/soul tunes out of Finland. It’s a movie soundtrack from the obscure Jörn Donner movie 69 SIXTYNINE. It has a sitar solo and is written from the perspective of a dog called Igor and his thoughts about the world. Extremely rare Holy Grail status 7” EP. [video embed in website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlyEliREa04] Brita Koivunen - Minka (1958) Very cool Finnish Jazz by Brita Koivunen, a secretary who became a Jazz-singer. It has some great trumpet playing by Ossi Runne. 7” Record - absolutely super rare. Lasse Leimola - Kolibri (1961) Rare as hell exotica 7” from 1961. Kolibri means hummingbird. Controversial lyrics with the n-word used in Finnish, and hummingbird-witnessing sex in huts in nowadays Namibia. Curiously, the James Bond theme was written in 1962. This is from 1961. Did they steal the Bond theme from Lasse Leimola? Hasse Walli - Juokse Sinä Humma (1981) This is a Folk-Jazz wizard "Hasse Wallis" Afro-Finnish rendition of an age-old Finnish traditional song. From the rare LP ”Goes Afro” with a Senegalese band. Superb example of Finnish Folk-Jazz; the whole LP is pure fire. Jaakko Gauriloff & Lapponian Reggae-yhtye - Tanja (1981) This one is beyond forgotten and it self-proclaims to be the first ever ”reggae” record made by Sami. Sung in the native Koltansaami language, speakers of which are counted in the few hundreds nowadays. It’s not reggae and it may very well be too much for some people. Leputation Of Slaves - Speak Up Mambo (1988) One of the alter egos of legendary Finnish art-/weirdorock band Sielun Veljet. And its mambo so yeah, why not. Tapio Rautavaara - Viis Veljestä (1961) Check out this great cowboy murder story and an overall great western track from a Finnish legend. Everybody dies in the end. the guy singing was a national hero; he won the Olympic gold in javelin throw, was World champion in archery, and a very acclaimed actor and musician. Rautavaara had an awesome voice. Kirka & The Islanders - Taas Nousen Junaan (1975) Another one by Kirka. This time it’s a funky cover of Bob Marleys "I Shot The Sheriff". Lifted from the very in-demand soul LP ”Tiukka Linja”. I picked this because of all the possible subjects in the world to talk about, it talks about a train ride to a small town called Mikkeli. Great cover on the LP. Eino Grön - Maliziusella (1959) Jazzy love song and a record so rare I might be the only one having this in playable condition. I am at least definitely only one sharing it. This guy is also a legend; he started with jazz like this but then went all in on tango and never looked back. One of the worst jokes I know includes this gentleman and goes like this. ”Eino Grön only wears evergreen tangas”. Permission to laugh now granted. -- www.thevinylexam.com www.patreon.com/thevinylexam Genre R&B & Soul
