Bella ~ Conscience Of Kings by Gaz Brownie published on 2024-03-08T11:09:14Z WHO PUT BELLA IN THE WYCH ELM ! A true and fascinating story of an unsolved murder that is literally five minutes from my house in Hagley Woods. When I first moved to the area more than 30 years ago I would see homemade signs around on the road islands saying…… Who But Bella In The Wych Elm. No internet or google to look things up, so I was puzzled to what it meant for a while until a local newspaper did a feature on the story explaining. Back in the early 1940s four teenage boys found the skeleton remains of a female pushed down into the hollow of a wych elm tree in Hagley Woods while they were out poaching for rabbits and bird eggs to supplement their diets in war time. The skeleton had been there 18 months or more. There are many wild and wonderful theories of how and why she was put there but still to this day no one knows the real truth. She was wearing a wedding ring and had been a mother according to the police’s original autopsy. Why wasn’t she missed someone must have known her. The world still goes crazy for the unsolved murder with films, books , plays, BBC podcasts and documentaries still being made. One site on YouTube as received over 6 million streams, so this isn’t just local gossip. This lady was named Bella after the early graffiti chalked on walls in the surrounding areas that said Who Put Bella In The Wych Elm . She deserves to be treated with compassion, respect and dignity. I hope this song goes a little way to that. I fitted the lyrics around to a wonderful piece of music that Noobly had already created. Sometimes it’s just feels he as a catalogue of perfect instrumentals to fit certain themes, what a talented man & friend. If you want to find out more then the BBC have probably the best story that kind of makes sense and cuts through the nonsense and bullshit that surrounds the murder. Check it out on their podcast called The Body In The Tree by journalist Nicola Goodwin. Eight short episodes of fantastic honest journalism. The cover picture is the actual Police map that marks out the wood and where the Wych Elm was, so I’m told. My fascination with this only exists because it’s on my doorstep and when I drive past the wood I always give her a kind thought. Her skeleton was never been buried and stayed in Police archives for years and got moved around the city . They have said they have lost her skeleton so are unable to do a modern dna test to trace her identity. More like it’s to costly and resources are better spent on recent crime not a murder over 80 years ago. She will never be laid to rest. BELLA Bella oh Bella x2 V1 It seems you once were a mother, and you may have even been a wife Because you were wearing a wedding ring on that fatal night And we’re you from around here Surely you were missed you my dear You’ve become a local iconic figure know one knows you but your so familiar Oh Bella Chorus It’s a story that still intrigues and know one seems to know And the graffiti as always showed Who put Bella in the wych elm Bella x2 baby you deserve so more than this Bella x2 baby was it covered up or was something missed Bella baby Who Put Bella In The Wych Elm V2 They gave you a name to make you exist Bella is beautiful in Italian so hard to resist Theories without fact so many tales & stories It was a long time ago now back in the 1940s Chorus Who Put Bella In The Witch Elm Into : Bella Bella baby what was your name Bella Bella baby forever in fame Bella Bella baby you deserve so much more than this Bella Bella baby I think something was a miss Bella baby Genre Indie Comment by Joe Stroffolino Nice track. Good lyrical expression of the narrative. Fine rock elements (drums and bass) support this (liked the electronica in there) but it is your vocal performance that propels this song! 2024-03-15T14:41:21Z Comment by Jonathan Beckenstein Both chilling and great sounding. 2024-03-15T11:33:07Z Comment by Surfers like Us Fantastic piece! Superb vocals. 2024-03-13T15:13:36Z Comment by Jeff Roberts great job Gaz bringing compelling content to song, again!!! you sent me down a rabbit hole; it's crazy to think of all the spying that went on during WWII both in UK and the continent; meanwhile the Home Guard was killing a lot of people mistakenly. https://historyandimagination.com/2022/10/30/who-put-bella-in-the-wych-elm-2/ 2024-03-13T15:07:09Z Comment by Steve Coombes Wonderful lyrical song 🎵. 2024-03-13T12:26:54Z Comment by Steve Matthews Fantastic work Gaz.
