Diversity & Inclusion by MOZË published on 2021-06-14T00:27:16Z I have designed an original soundscape that is based upon ideas and understandings learnt throughout the semester, based on diversity and inclusion. After much research and evaluation I transformed my understandings into sound, whereby listeners can escape into a world that embraces the beauty of diversity. I chose a contrasting range of textures in order to elevate the core focus on diversity, including the underlying rainforest sample, which immediately provides the listener with a setting - that is a representation of the real world that we live in. I wanted to incorporate a sense of life, reality and evolution. With my western understanding of music and structure the A harmonic minor scale brings a Middle Eastern tone into the mix. The structure is based upon a western structure, AABA - also known as pop song form. The ‘chorus’, or B section of the song transposes from the harmonic minor scale, into C Major, with embellishments on the Gb (giving it a bluesy and soulful tone). With these combining elements in the chorus the song, in a sense, comes together. This is my way of portraying inclusivity, where all the diverse sounds and tonal elements that make you feel somewhat on edge or uncomfortable can come together and feel included - therefore also making sense to the ear tonally. Aside from the harmonic and structural elements of the piece, I have also taken genre into account. I began writing from a film-esk point of view, and then moved into the world of electronica, experimenting with stretching and distorting the sounds as far as they can go. The chorus is a mix of soulful, electronic pop – a conventional repeating chorus with an electronic synth and gospel choir to incorporate a sense of celebration. Finally, as the second verse comes in I added a simple kick and snare, with a rock style mix. This makes them sound strong and hearty, providing a new attitude that sounds motivational. Finally, I sampled the parts of Wendy Night Agard’s Ted talk speech, focusing on diversity, inclusion and belonging from the inside out.
