Wendel Tom Welch Yokohama Wendel is London born and Yokohama based musician/songwriter Tom Welch, plus an ever-growing list of musicians and collaborators. Growing up surrounded by great sounds played to him by his family he developed a love of music from a young age. Early musical influences like Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, The Beatles, David Bowie, Crowded House, Squeeze, Neil Young, Wilco and The Jayhawks being just a taste of the bands that led him to attempt to play guitar and write some tunes. “Wendel” was decided upon- amid the madness of 2020- as the moniker for his new musical project, taking the name from the worlds first drum sampling machine, developed by Roger Nichols for Walter Becker and Donald Fagen and first used on the Steely Dan album Gaucho. Citing Steely Dan among one of his all time favorite bands, he was blown away when drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, John Mayer, James Taylor) laid down some (superb) drums on the debut Wendel single These Times. The track was mastered by Andy Walker at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. Smooth Rhodes vibes, digging drums, funky fender basses, jazzy pianos, cutting guitar lines and three part harmonies are all part of the Wendel manifesto....sometimes. Sometimes it gets dark and weird with backwards guitars and scratchy drum machine beats, vintage synth sounds and random noise. Turn up Wendel, the neighbors are listening.
