Monday, January 27th, 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps Auschwitz-Birkenau. The commemorative exhibition “Butterflies don't live in the ghetto” displays artistic interpretations of the 27 brave victims in the form of original artworks created by the students of the Atelier of Photography at Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design & Art. The exhibition runs simultaneously in Ladislav Sutnar Gallery and the Old Synagogue in the city center of Pilsen, Czech Republic. “Butterflies don't live in the ghetto” serves as a meeting point for the peaceful commemoration of all victims of the second World War and calls for tolerance, peace and brotherhood in the politically tense world of today. Curator Jan Van Woensel “The songs and poems that she composed in Theresienstadt had almost a healing effect when she played the guitar and sang them to her son and the others. Her heartfelt lyric was a consolation to the others living in the ghetto. People perceived her as an angel helping them through their suffering. Ilse Weber thus kept helping others till the very end of her life.” - Viktor Chomiak about Ilse Weber
