“The Art of Living'' is my (Zenchant’s) debut EP. I began working on this EP in 2019, when I was inspired by the book titled “The Art of Living” by Thich Naht Hahn. Thich Naht Hahn is an acclaimed author and Taoist monk from Vietnam. In this book, Thich teaches about life, death, love, and growth. I wrote this EP with the intention of expressing the same sentiment. There are three tracks and an EP mix, each of them is a different style and BPM, but the EP remains cohesive as a whole.
“The Art of Living” begins with “Sunshine:”. Riddled with watery textures, bright tones, and gnarly bass design, the first drop of “Sunshine” sets the mood right. With spoken word from Thich himself, “Sunshine” acts as a beautiful reminder that we are one with the universe. The second drop of “Sunshine” gets experimental and melodic, and ends with a wonderful message from Thich about finding connection to the universe.
“Create” is the second track on “The Art of Living”. It begins with spoken word from Abraham Hicks (spoken by Esther Hicks), encouraging the listener to create their own reality. “Create” incorporates natural percussion instruments, intricate rhythms, granular movement, and a funky neuro lead synth. When I began writing “Create”, I was heavily inspired by IDM and neuro-hop. I was also deep into my college experience when I was prompted to read the book “The Astonishing Power of Emotions” by Esther and Jerry Hicks. This book proceeded to change the way I thought of myself and my reality, so I felt very inclined to share these messages with the world. “Create” is my gift to those who need the help I was in need of. It’s also a fun, upbeat, tune with melodies meant to bring joy. Altogether, “Create” is a tune filled with love and good intentions.
The final track “Erothyme- Two Lights (Zenchant Remix)” is a remix of a fun, melodic, emotional tune by one of my favorite producers and musicians, Erothyme. The first time I heard “Two Lights”, it inspired me so-much I mustered up the courage to ask Erothyme for the stems. To my delight, he was happy to send them to me! I got working right away, and within 2 weeks, I had the rough draft finished. After another month or two of mixing, Erothyme was impressed, and approved of me releasing this on “The Art of Living”. “Two Lights” is the first time I have worked heavily with melody and harmony of natural, live instruments. “Two Lights” incorporates flutes, hand pan, piano, ukulele (played by me!), as well as neuro, reese, wobbles and wubs. “Two Lights” represents an emotional journey beginning slowly and easing you in with textures and sounds reminiscent of a winter’s morning. “Two Lights” progresses throughout the tune, harboring feelings of success and empowerment.
The EP mix delivers each tune in a cohesive mix. I decided to release the mix as a way to say “This is Zenchant”, and "This is The Art of Living".
