electronic emancipation by Zozo published on 2022-11-27T22:26:04Z This mix stems from my playlist "electronic emancipation" that I created whilst digging through the depths of spotify on my quest to find music created by women, non-binary and trans artists (FLINTA*). If you really looking, you can definitely find a lot of treasures. But the algorithm isn´t our friend. What has always struck me is the fact that when I look at the "what others liked" category on the profile of female, trans and non-binary artist (working more commercially) a lot of white men are recommended. A prominent example is Peggy Gou. The first two artists recommended for me are Ross from Friends and Project Pablo. When you click on Ross from Friend´s profile however, Peggy Gou only appears at the very end. She doesn´t appear at all in Project Pablo`s profile. Apparently, it doesn´t work both ways and this has to change!! I´m sure that this category is also influenced by your listening behaviour and search timeline but especially because I predominantly listen to and look for music by female* artists I don´t understand how spotify can get it so wrong. From what I have noticed there has been a positive increase in representation of FLINTA* djs around the world, on big festival line-ups and in clubs. You cannot really publish an all-white male line-up anymore without being rolled over by a shitstorm. Whether the people in power (still mostly white cis men) are acting on intrinsic values trying to foster diverse representation and equality is debatable, but at least some battles have been won. However, there are many more questions still to be answered and many inequalities still to be deconstructed. Whether we´re speaking about who owns labels and therefore decides which music gets published and dispersed or speaking about who owns festivals (or works as festival bookers) and therefore decides who will stand on stage. As well as the high dominance of men in the technical realms of the music industry (including mastering and event technicians). There are great people already out there trying to change power hierarchies such as Queer Ear mastering based in Berlin. I really hope that we will see more changes in the future. Until then I hope you enjoy this mix <3 It starts relatively slow and then picks up halfway through, so maybe the ideal music to listen to while you’re cooking right before a night out ;) P:S: All but two songs are by FLINTA* artists Genre Electronic
