Mary Jacobsen speaks with Middleton resident, podcaster of People Hidden in History, and author Kathleen Langone about her recently published biography, “The Miniature Painter Revealed: Amalia Kussner’s Gilded Age Pursuit of Fame and Fortune.”

Langone talks about the popularity of miniature portraits during the Gilded Age, roughly between 1890 -1910. She discusses Kussner’s rise from middle class, Midwestern roots to become an independent, financially successful, bold, and sought after portrait artist, commanding high commissions comparable to those of male artists of the time.

Kussner’s clientele included social elites such as Mrs. John Jacob Astor, Consuelo Vanderbilt, Edward VII of England, Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra of Russia, and diamond magnate Cecil Rhodes.
