Vastness by Vastness: Memory of Color published on 2024-12-02T17:42:26Z Vastness: Memory of Color is a collaboration best described as initiated by Anne Beffel with her photographs, which she handed off to Sound Designers Aidan Conrade, Jayden Palarz, and Tom Stiles for interpretation in audio, and to Angie Gecosky for assistance with video editing and production coordination. Our goal was to create a meditative experience (loosely defined) for viewer- participants. The photographs are based upon Beffel’s research and lived experiences of the relationship between vision, or how we use our eyes, and our experiences of our environments. How we see shapes our lived collaborations with ecosystems as much as what we see. Vision is understood as a fluid process of making abstract information such as color and shape into imagery - representations of our shared world. Art images enable viewer-participants to come closer to a shared experience, even as we each see the world from different points of view, and with our unique eyes, minds, bodies, spirits, histories and subject positions. -- Anne Beffel is an artist and Professor at Michigan Technological University. Since earning degrees from the University of Michigan, University of Iowa, participating in cultural theory studies at the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Studio Program in New York, and training at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior as a mindfulness facilitator, Beffel has created public art at sites including the World Financial Center in Lower Manhattan shortly after 9/11; New York Downtown Hospital and surrounding streets and community centers; public parks across the U.S.; Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and the Ford Center Forest in Alberta, Michigan. Angie Gecosky is a sound designer and video editor studying at Michigan Technological University. She has a passion for how sound can build an immersive environment in media and can impact or show how we perceive the world.
