American tenor Rafael Moras makes his Seattle Opera debut creating the role of Tariq. In Act 1 this teenager woos his girlfriend Laila by quoting a poem they studied in school, the ancient tale of star-crossed lovers Laili and Majnoon:
“I pass by these walls, the walls of Laili, and I kiss them, these walls of Laili. It is not the love of the house that has taken my heart, but of the one who dwells therein.”
