Montuno is a derived form from the son of Cuba Oriente and Santiago de Cuba. As a traditional form it is used for improvising over a fixed bass line often supplied by the Afro Cuban marímbula. The study is made up of three sections of melodic material and plays on the repeated dissonant effect of a minor second. It is the last of the first volume of pieces composed in 1959 while Brouwer was teaching in New York.
