This next one comes by way of Olivia Mendez, a gifted DJ and insatiable vinyl lover, vinyl digger, whose groovy and mesmerising, techno emanates libertine energy from every pore. Growing up in France and influenced by Senegalese rhythms, early Detroit and the UK underground (where she cut her teeth for five long years). Her sound bridges cultures and genres, united by a shared affinity for beats, rhythm and the pursuit of a trance-like state. Her work strives to highlight a sonic kinship and broadcast a rendition of it seen through her own personal lens, that is, of someone whose own path has taken her from France and the UK to Germany, where she now lives and runs a tight ship, and frequently plays the usual list of big league venues. From her Berlin base, she’s founded DIG (Dust In Grooves), and co-created its sub-label DIG Curated alongside Chami, born out of a shared passion for uncovering the work of little known artists and preserving their sounds in circular form. She is also the founder of the FLINTA collective KONVENT, dedicated to establishing feminist cultural spaces through in situ music pieces and art interventions. Blending creativity, community, and a celebratory spirit, KONVENT provides enriching experiences while actively challenging patriarchal oppression. Politics, togetherness and music are the lifeblood of Mendez’s work, and her looping and groove-leaning sound the conduit through which her ethic manifests. Bassiani Podcast 239 marks the latest chapter, presenting this mission in its purest form: a two-hour journey weaving current aesthetics with nostalgic imprints. The progressive mix transitions from minimalistic rhythms to hypnotic, spacey, mental and groovy elements, punctuated by dreamy, suspended moments. This carefully paced journey is a condensed version of the type of progression she likes to explore in longer sets.
