Conquering Lion Records is an independent record label founded in 2013 by Christopher "Chris Lion" Mattis, a music enthusiast with a passion for spreading positive messages through music. The label's roots, however, can be traced back to the iconic Conquering Lion Sound System, which was born in July 1989 in the hills of Manchester, Jamaica. The sound system was created to promote consciousness in music at a time when dancehall began to dominate the musical scene in Jamaica, highlighting profanity and dehumanizing individuals in society.
Owned by Ainsley "Dobaman" Mattis, Conquering Lion Sound became a vehicle of expression for youths seeking a more conscious musical experience. It first made its international debut playing in the United Kingdom in 1991, and since then, the sound system has played in various venues throughout the UK and Canada. Garnet Silk was a staple of the sound, exclusively creating dub plates for his friend and sound mate. After Garnet's untimely passing, Ainsley took a hiatus from music out of respect for his beloved friend.
However, Ainsley's legacy would become a revitalized vision for Chris Lion, his firstborn. Chris would expound on his knowledge and love for the sound system culture, inspiring the idea to create a recording label. And so, Conquering Lion Records was born. Since its inception, the label has been on a mission to inspire positive change through music with a focus on reggae and roots music deeply rooted in the principles of Ras Tafari.
Conquering Lion Records has worked with some of the most respected artists in the genre, including Capleton, Lutan Fyah, Daweh Congo, Iba Mahr and Chezidek. However, the label's most notable collaboration is with the Jamaican roots reggae singer and chanter, Hempress Sativa. Together, they have released two full-length albums, "UnconqueRebel" and "Scientist Meets Hempress Sativa in Dub," both of which received critical acclaim worldwide and were also released on 12" vinyls. Their most recent work is the sophomore album "Charka" by Hempress Sativa.
As the manager for Hempress, Chris Lion has traveled extensively with her, performing on major music festivals and events across Europe, the USA, and South America. Through their music, they have inspired audiences to think critically and take positive actions towards creating a better world.
At its core, Conquering Lion Records is deeply committed to the liberation of the mind, rooted in the critical order of Ras Tafari. The label's ultimate goal is to use the power of music to inspire, create positive change, and promote messages of love, unity, and justice for generations to come.
