Israel is unironically super important to the field of computer science.
This past Spring, US media outlets condemned the Georgian parliament --the Asian country, not the US state-- for passing the 'Transparency On Foreign Influence' law, which is essentially FARA. US media claimed enforcement of the law would restrict freedom of the press and suppress political dissent.
One exemption to registration in FARA is for "defense of a foreign government vital to US defense." Basically, 'national security' is exempt from FARA.
