Devolutionery Music Dumisani Jere Johannesburg In the intricate tapestry of existence, I find my purpose as an artist. I am Dumisani Jere, known in the creative realm as Devolutionery which I’ve coined to describe my illustration process of returning back to the essences of space and time from my adolescent years. My work is a culmination of introspection, cultural exploration, and a deep-seated connection to the ever-evolving human experience. My artistic journey is a harmonious fusion of various disciplines and influences. Drawing from the wellspring of my Southern African heritage, I strive to unravel the complexities of identity, belonging, and transformation. Through my creative process, I invite viewers to question the boundaries that define our perceptions and encourage them to venture into the uncharted territories of thought. Biography Dumisani “Devolutionery” Jere is a contemporary artist. He was born in Soweto, Johannesburg South Africa, in 1991. He studied at the Open Window Institute independent art and digital sciences school based in Pretoria, whereby he obtained a BA Degree in Visual Communication Design in 2017. His work draws inspiration from Afrocentric mythology in relation to global postmodern sociologies. Jere experiments and explores these themes in various audio and visual, illustration, motion design, painting, and digital mixed mediums. That seems to be juxtaposed to the subjective self, reawakened by the dawning of individualism unraveling within the current state of isolation and social distancing. The Visionary was held in 2014 at Grayscale Gallery and the second solo exhibition, iD_Visual Art Exhibition, was held in 2016 at the Priest Gallery and in 2022 exhibited at the SA Theatre State. Jere co-foundered and has been involved in several independent group exhibitions with Buka Arts as a curator hosted at the J&B Hive. His practice portrays detailed depictions of the transformation within the Afro-futuristic objective self-introspective relation to the other. Currently, I’m based at August House and represented by the following art institutions such as Lizamore and Associates, Latitudes Online, and Afrikanizm Art. As well as being the global top 10 finalists, my video artwork documentary short film entitled Syncopation will be promoted in all the Visual Art Awards (VAA) events in Italy and in South Africa, and online. As well, worked part-time as a gift store manager at the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria. I’m currently represented for commission work by the Humusha Creative Hub hosted by the SA Research Chair in Science Communication, which is in partnership with VANSA and the Stellenbosch Department of Journalism. Fak'ugasi was nominated as best contemporary music category for 2023 and the Arts & Culture Trust official winner of the 2023 ACT Nyoloha T-shirt merchandise collaboration competition.
