I was a toxic teenage daydreamer. I recorded countless hours of MTV videos, I wrote love songs, I read cassette lyric booklets, I dreamed about one day playing on a stage. All from my basement.
I remember hearing the Descendents for the first time there. My high school buddy, Ryan, raved to me about the band and let me borrow their 1991 compilation, Somery, on CD. I popped it into my player and fell in love immediately. There was so much melody in these unabashed love songs, a sincere connection of pop and angst. I found everything they sang about so relatable. But when I reached track 24, I knew I was hearing one of the most perfect songs ever written.
I was 15 years old and I had yet to see a punk rock show. I couldn’t believe I’d never heard of this band. Not to mention that, by that time I did, they had already disbanded. That is, until 1996, when they reunited and put out Everything Sucks. I’ve seen them many times now and they’re always a blast, but I cherish that first time I heard “Get the Time.”
