Market-based education reform may be on the wane, but what’s the alternative? Our guest, Jonathan Gyurko, author of the provocative new book Publicization, argues that public education advocates need to rally around a goal of making public schools as public as possible. That means changing the way we think about funding, governance, accountability–indeed, the very purpose of school. If we want to move beyond decades of privatization, says Gyurko, we need a hopeful vision of what schools could be.

As a person who has helped create public school options, both district & charter, for decades, I'm wondering if you like to discuss some of these ideas with Khalique Rogers, the new - co-director of the Center for School Change and yours truly. We've been bringing people together from "silos" to produce concrete progress. We've used conversations that it appears you support to produce exciting new opportunities such as creating programs in which high schools help students learn construction skills as they build housing for low income people and people experiencing homelessness. We also think that Gyurko seems to ignore the educational justification of providing options - it's NOT just about markets. Are you interested in discussing this?
